Alimentation expérimentale de l'huître Crassostrea gigas à l'aide de navicules bleus Haslea ostrearia (Simonsen) de différentes tailles ArchiMer
Barille, Laurent; Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe; Robert, Jean-michel.
The influence on the feeding physiology (clearance, filtration, ingestion, absorption) of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas of low concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM ranging from 2 to 20 mg.l-l) and high food quality (mean organic fraction =54 %) was studied in the laboratory. Experimental diets were made up with three strains of the "blue diatom" Haslea ostrearia, which is responsible of the greening of oyster-ponds. The strains were characterized by different sizes (48, 65 and 98 µm respectively) but possessed the same density and biochemical composition. Clearance rate was found constant at 2.2 1.h(-l).g-l dry weight and therefore was not influenced by increasing seston load. Pseudofaeces production was observed for SPM...

Analysis of defects in coffee beans compared to biplots for simultaneous tables Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Brighenti,Carla Regina Guimarães; Cirillo,Marcelo Angelo.
ABSTRACT The demand for high quality coffee has become a consolidated criterion to achieve the best prices. Currently, cooperatives evaluate the coffee beans mainly through the particle size and the number of defects in the sample. This evaluation type generates counting data that originates contingency tables from different periods or groups involving the same variables in the row and column and there may be interest in knowing if two tables are related and how much are related. These are the so-called combined tables. Statistical analysis techniques normally employed do not include categorical data in the combined tables. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of different types of defects in samples of large flat coffee beans in two...

Assessment of physical and physicochemical quality of main chocolates traded in Peru Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Chire-Fajardo,Gabriela Cristina; Valdivia-Arrunategui,Rocío Alicia; Orihuela-Rivera,Carmen Adela; Ureña- Peralta,Milber Oswaldo.
Abstract: The quality of the main chocolates marketed in Peru was determined. The physical aspect: color (C *, H *, IB), hardness and particle size, as well as physicochemical: water activity (aw), moisture, fat and ash, correlating with the declaration of ingredients presented in the packaging. We evaluated 30 experimental units of chocolates (imported, domestic, dark chocolate and milk) by experimental methods, randomly acquired from different establishments. The difference between color and hardness by origin was attributed to the dairy component. Dark chocolate had lower values of color components (8.75 ± 0.94 C *, 7.60 ± 4.71 H * and 28.46 ± 0.86 IB) than milk constituents (15.04 ± 2.78 C, 34.59 ± 7.46 H * and 34.55 ± 2.87 IB) and in hardness values...

Prieto-García,Francisco; Prieto Méndez,Judith; Acevedo Sandoval,Otilio A; Canales Flores,Roberto A; Marmolejo Santillán,Yolanda.
Nopal fruits (Opuntia spp.) represent a valuable food in various Latin America countries. Typically, the seeds are discarded. However, they could contain basic components that might enable their use as a nutritional supplement or as another product convenient for the food industry. The objective of this paper was to perform a physical and chemical characterization of the seeds of three species of Opuntia (O. Heliabravoana, O. Xoconostle, and O. ficus-indica) to provide data that will help determine their potential use. Fruits were collected in different municipalities of Hidalgo State, Mexico; its seeds were extracted, dried, and analyzed. The results reveal that, except for small differences, the seeds had similarity in the physical characteristics of...

Computer simulation of a Rietema-family hydrocyclone used in irrigated agriculture1 Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Tonin,Paulo César; Dantas Neto,José; Santos,José Airton Azevedo dos.
The hydrocyclone is a centrifugal separator that has been used for over 50 years in the chemical processing and mining industries. In irrigated agriculture in Brazil it is not used as often. One reason for this is the poor understanding by designers of the complex phenomena involved in the internal flow of the hydrocyclone, and the lack of knowledge of new computational tools available on the market. This study evaluates the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as a potential tool to be used in the design and optimisation of hydrocyclones used in irrigated agriculture. A 50 mm Rietema-family hydrocyclone is simulated using CFD. The turbulent flow inside the hydrocyclone is modelled using the Reynolds Stress Model, and a Eulerian approach is employed...

Corn grain processing improves chemical composition and fermentative profile of rehydrated silage Animal Sciences
Silva, Marlon Richard Hilário da; Jobim, Clóves Cabreira; Neumann, Mikael; Osmari, Milene Puntel.
This study evaluated the effects of the rehydration and ensiling of corn grain with two geometric mean diameters (GMD) of 0.55 and 1.83 mm obtained by the diameter of the sieved used on the fermentation characteristics and chemical composition of the silage. The experimental design was completely randomized with two treatments and six replications, as follows: rehydrated fine-corn grain silage (RFS) and rehydrated coarse-corn grain silage (RCS). Ground corn was rehydrated with water to achieve moisture levels close to 350 g kg-1. There was no effect on the dry matter recovery, though the recovery rate was high, with values greater than 97% in both silages. The particle size influenced the fiber content, with lower values in the RFS. The acetic and lactic...

Determination of methanesulfonic acid and non-sea-salt sulfate in single marine aerosol particles OMA
Kolaitis, L.N.; Bruynseels, F.; Van Grieken, R.; Andreae, M.O..
In open ocean waters the predominant volatile sulfur compound is dimethyl sulfide (DMS), representing almost 90% of the marine sulfur emissions. Methanesulfonic acid (MSA), one of the oxidation products of DMS, is consequently an important constituent of marine aerosols. Laser microprobe mass analysis (LAMMA) has been used for single-particle analysis of particles collected in the marine boundary layer. MSA, like the non-sea-salt sulfate, is mainly associated with the smallest aerosol particles, whose LAMMA spectra match the reference fingerprint spectra of MSA salts, sodium methanesulfonate and ammonium methanesulfonate. The presence of nitrate and heavy metal ions in the LAMMA spectra can reveal, to a certain extent, the degree of air pollution at the...

Effect of physical properties on the specific heat preserved ground sheanut kernel (BUTYROSPERNUMPARADOXUM) CIGR Journal
H.U., Nwannewuihe; M. C., Onwukwe; J.C., Edeh; N. I., Nwagugu; J.N., Nwakaire.
Most agricultural materials undergo various forms of preservation in order to enhance shelf life. Sheanut is usually preserved by heating the kernels over fire in a pot for a time period. This affects its properties especially during heat processing. It is expected that this work will provide information that would help optimize such processing. Preserved sheanut kernel samples sourced locally were prepared by manually cleaning, sorting, grinding and sieving to obtain desired particle sizes. The specific heat of the samples were evaluated as a function of particle size (2.36 mm), (1.18 mm and 1.00 mm), moisture content (initial moisture content, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% db) and temperature (50oC, 60oC, 70oC, 80oC, and 90oC). The specific heat of each particle...

Effectiveness of fused magnesium potassium phosphate for marandu grass Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Orioli Júnior,Valdeci; Coutinho,Edson Luiz Mendes.
The current high price of KCl and great dependence on importation to satisfy the Brazilian demand indicate the need for studies that evaluate the efficiency of other K sources, particularly those based on domestic raw material. For this purpose, a greenhouse experiment was conducted with samples of a sandy clay loam Typic Haplustox, in a completely randomized 4 x 3 x 2 factorial design: four K rates (0, 60, 120, and 180 mg kg-1), three sources (potassium chloride (KCl), fused magnesium potassium phosphate (FMPP) and a mixture of 70 % FMPP + 30 % KCl) and two particle sizes (100 and 60 mesh), with three replications. Potassium fertilization resulted in significant increases in shoot dry matter production and in K concentrations, both in soil and plants. The...

Freeze-drying of ampicillin solid lipid nanoparticles using mannitol as cryoprotectant BJPS
Alihosseini,Faezeh; Ghaffari,Solmaz; Dabirsiaghi,Ali Reza; Haghighat,Setareh.
abstract Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) are interesting colloidal drug-delivery systems, since they have all the advantages of the lipid and polymeric nanoparticles. Freeze-drying is a widely used process for improving the stability of SLNs. Cryoprotectants have been used to decrease SLN aggregations during freeze-drying. In this study Ampicillin was chosen to be loaded in a cholesterol carrier with nano size range. To support the stability of SLNs, freeze-drying was done using mannitol. Particle size, drug release profile and antibacterial effects were studied after freeze-drying in comparison with primary SLNs. Preparations with 5% mannitol showed the least particle size enlargement. The average particle size was 150 and 187 nm before and after...

Influence of suspended mussel lines on sediment erosion and resuspension in Lagune de la Grande Entrée, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Québec, Canada ArchiMer
Walker, Tony R.; Grant, Jon; Weise, Andrea M.; Mckindsey, Christopher W.; Callier, Myriam D.; Richard, Marion.
Downward fluxes of organically rich biodeposits under suspended mussel lines can cause benthic impacts such as changes in benthic community structure or microbial mat production. Quantifying sediment erosion in these coastal ecosystems is important for understanding how fluxes of organic matter and mussel biodeposits contribute to benthic–pelagic coupling. Critical shear velocity (u*crit), erosion rates and particle size distributions of resuspended sediment were measured at four stations distributed along a transect perpendicular to a mussel farm in Lagune de la Grande Entrée, Îles-de-la-Madeleine (Quebec, Canada). Stations were selected underneath the outer-most mussel line (0 m) and at distances of 15, 30 m and at a reference station (500 m) further...

Influence of the grinding method on the flow properties of barley CIGR Journal
Hoffmann, Thomas.
Hammer mills or roller mills are used to grind grain for feed for animal husbandry. The grinding process in hammer mills is based on impact stress on the grain kernels. Roller mills, however, apply pressure and shear stress. The different working principles in hammer mills and roller mills lead to different physical properties of the ground material. The aim of the project was to quantify the physical properties of barley which was ground by a hammer mill or a roller mill. Therefore, the particle size distributions of the ground material were determined by sieving. The particle form was characterized by a form factor. Shear experiments according to Jenike were carried out to determine the flowability. The bulk density was obtained from the quotient of the...

Interpretation of particle spectra of electronic counters by microscopical methods OMA
Bakker, C.; Prins, T.C.; Tackx, M.L.M..
1. Using monocultures or single species dominated natural phytoplankton, cell counts and volume estimations obtained by visual and electronic methods show reasonable agreement.Calibration seems possible (Figs.1-2).2. Further examples given (Fig. 3-4) show that microscopical identification of the volume peaks in electronic counter spectra of natural seston is not quite simple. Phytoplankton peaks may not be detected in the Counter spectrum. Shifts of Counter peaks to the left side of the visual spectrum may be found when cylindrical, elongated or needle- like phytoplankton dominate the sample.3. Both visual and electronic methods include potentially large errors. Possibly particle volume is either overestimated by the microscope and / or underestimated by...
